I was informed that Glenn Benson (known to all of us as County) has passed away, and it's only appropriate that the home page here have some words about him.  County has been a big part of this community since the day it opened, and has been a member of the online horse world since I was a 15 year old girl.  His knowledge has been incredibly useful over the years, and this place will be missing a big part of its heart and soul without him.

Jennifer Willey is a forum member here, and she had the following words to say on her blog:

Last weekend I lost a good friend. He was also a son, a father, a husband and a grandfather. He will be missed by many many people.

Glenn had a way of rubbing on people and making an impact. Some people did not always appreciate this rubbing but we can say for sure he is remembered!

I met him back when I was working for a ranch. I used to go over to his place to talk horses and often get advice when I didn’t know what else to do. Glenn always had sound advice.

He said to me once, “If you don’t like the way things are, you need to make a change. Only you can be responsible for that.”

What great words of wisdom for life and for horses.

I always enjoyed stopping by the farm where he raised quality quarter horses and cattle. He was always fun to chat with and a person could talk with him for hours and never know that much time had passed.

Always willing to help another person out, Glenn told me if I ever needed help, just to call him. He was very gruff on the outside and very soft on the inside.

He was very opinionated and bull-headed. Very much like his beloved bulldogs “Millie” (who preceded him in death) and “Winnie.”

When I first met Millie I said, “Glenn, that is one funny looking animal.” He laughed and replied with, “that they are.” One thing about Glenn, he was very straightforward. Likewise, he appreciated straightforwardness right back.

I am saddened by his death. It was too early. I’m glad I got to spend some time with him back in January and am regretting cancelling our lunch plans two weeks ago.

I'm glad he got to spend some time on this earth retired. He was a very hard worker. Up until recently he worked in town full time (40 hours) plus he ran the farm. He had something like 60-80 head of horses and cows. Not exactly a small job. He also made all of his own hay.

I am thankful his death was peaceful, in his sleep. He is probably up there leaning on a fence post, looking at horses and chatting, (and letting his opinion be known).

At least I hope so, he once told me his favorite thing to do was look at horses and talk.

RIP Glenn

His temperament?-full of sass but highly intelligent and easy to train.

With MUCH regret, my daughter has agreed that we can sell her loving Squanto.  We always thought he'd be with us forever but unfortunately some issues are popping up with her dad so I think we'll have to soon find a different place to keep the horses (they are at his house now).  And we can't afford to board 4 horses....

Squanto is somewhere in the 20 -25 yr range, I say range because by the age we were told when we bought him about 5 years ago he'd be 20.  But we did run into someone that knew him earlier in his life and they thought he was older.  But I'll guarantee you that no one would be able to guess his age by looking at him.

He walks, trots, canters & stops on cue.  He takes his leads.  He's been used for pleasure classes and game classes in wsca shows.  In  fact we took him to 1 show last year so my daughter could game him and he qualified for the champ show in both classes they went in.  He's not a speed demon but he curls right around the barrels and such.  He's the quietest boy on earth - my daughter can trail ride him anywhere (by herself) and I know she'll be safe.  He never shys, bolts, rears, bucks, etc.  He's easy to catch (waits for you at the gate).

There are a number of people from this board (Ruby, ChristineO, Ajinx) that know our Squanto and I'm sure they'd all agree that he's an amazing kids pony.  He's also been used for a number of birthday parties and for one, the kids painted him, braided him, decorated him, etc.  And he never moved a muscle.

Squanto does have one negative.  After having him for 4 years he became buddy sour to his friend Soupy.  BUT oddly enough, the only time it shows up is at horse shows so I think it's more of an insecurity issue.  At home, she can jump on him and ride off down the road or into the woods without one look back.  And if we take him to the shows by himself, he's also just fine.  Not a peep.  And as I mentioned, it took 4 years for this to happen at our place so I'm guessing that it did happen at his new home it wouldn't be for a number of years.

BTW, he doesn't need any special grain or hay as long as he's in a herd that will let him eat his own fair share.  I say that because it does take him a little longer to eat his food than our other horses.  His teeth are good but he's missing 2.  Had them done last fall and the vet said none of the others are loose. He's never foundered and is healthy.

Jeez, I'm writing this with tears in my eyes - I had no idea this would be so hard. Cry   I've attached a few pictures.  The one in the pasture is from this spring - he wasn't completely shed out yet.  I'll get more this weekend.  The others are from the past 2 years.

I'm asking $650.00 for him to a good home.  We will ask for multiple references.  This man deserves a fabulous home with little kids that will love him and treat him right.   If we can't find that, then we'll just find a way to afford board for him.   Grin

I'm not desperate to sell this guy, but he's finished so I'm offering him. Won't be sad if no one wants him though!

http://pleasurehorse.equine.com/horses-for-sale/horse-ad-888401.html?sr=1

Free longing videos on Youtube. My 4 yo kicked him in the chest, and while it minimally effects his movement (little swollen fluid) it doesn't due him justice to take a video at this time. As soon as it goes down, there will be a riding video available of him.

Thanks
Tana

I have a 2 horses that I need to find homes for.  I simply do not have the time to serve them right.
One is a gorgeous well bred 5 yo 15h gelding that really needs to be trained to ride... he will be the best trail horse, I really love this horse's personality.  I do not have the $$$ to send him to training, and I would hate to have him waste as a pasture ornament.  He is out of my Mainly Marty daughter and by Intimidating Te (APHA champion son of Luckys Diamond Te).  He is SPB sorrel, (I know, not desireable), but he is just SO pretty and well built.
Another I have is an 1991 gr-daughter of Watch Joe Jack.  14.3h Gray overo APHA broodmare, OLWS positive.  I have not bred mares for several years so she is just enjoying life in the pasture.  She is extremely low maintenance.  She never needs trimming... really.  She keeps them trim on her own.  Stays plump and healthy on round bales / pasture only.  She is all white ( but in the summer you can see her pattern on her skin under her hair)  very loud overo.
Let me know if they interest you... snazzypaints@aol.com

I have a 13 year old gelding - he's 14.2 hands. Built like a quarter horse with color so full mane and tail. He was shown as a youngster in the futurities won money in halter, wp and english. He spent last 8 years in Missouri pretty much as trail horse and pasture buddy. I got him back when his owner died last year and wasnt planning on parting with him but he's too young to be left hanging around without a job and his own rider. He's current on everything. Good home is a must more then anything - asking $700.00 or bo.

Im getting to point need to cut back - between work keeping pretty busy and then messed up a shoulder bad so off rest of year need to get realistic with herd.

I have a b/w pinto gelding (recently gelded) 4 year old. Has been shown in Pinto Hunter Classes and Open - Rom in most colorful and top 5 in Open Halter with National Points.  Thunder stands 13.3 and likes to show, he's ready to broke out. I recently gelded him as dont need 2 stallions - current shots, coggins etc. I'm more concerned with a good home then the price - I have him priced at is not because of quality or issues. Priced at $700 or bo.

White pony mare - bred, 12 years old: been mostly a brood mare last several years and bred to pinto pony stallion for 2010 foal. Current on everything - could show open halter, very cute. 11 hands - $250.00

Pinto Show Pony Stallion - RC Ring My Bell - shown pinto circuit has ROE and Rom in halter and most colorful 4 years old. He was started with driving last year. He has 2 loud colored foals on the ground limited breeding - but first foal won futurity, and came in top 3 with end of year points for Minnesota and National Pinto org. He moves like a wp horse moreso then pony. Good attitude and easy to handle - he's 12.2 hands - asking $4500.00 or bo. Jennifer (longfieldfarm@yahoo.com

Chief is an approx. 17 hand thoroughbred gelding with a star, snip, and four socks. He spent four unsuccessful years racing and retired sound after the age of 6. He spent some time ponying other horses at the track and was then used as a lesson horse for intro dressage and also was shown in 4H by a beginner rider. He was used in parades and is a fun trail horse---he's super willing to cross through water or whatever else you want to do on the trail with him. He's been jumped and was very willing, but hasn't been jumped in over a year. He's a very scopy jumper. He loves attention and clips, bathes, loads, etc. He's up to date on shots and coggins. If the farrier comes out tomorrow, he'll be up to date on farrier, too. Tongue

Chief deserves a relaxing atmosphere where he can be used as a lesson horse, as a trail horse, or as a fun horse rather than as an ultra-competitive showhorse. I think he would be best suited for a confident rider over the age of 11. He would be a great teen's horse or husband horse.

Chief is located about 45 minutes north west of Columbus, Ohio. $2500.
Pictures available on request.

edited to add: He's being sold because I have a three year old stallion who needs all of my attention and I don't have time to ride and show both to their potential. I've been waiting for the stallion to grow up for YEARS, so Chief needs someone who's been waiting for HIM for years.
